Why Is Pharmacogenomic Testing Important?

Genes  play an important role in determining the right drug and dosing for a particular condition.  A treatment that works for one individual may not work - or may cause severe side effects - for another individual.  Pharmacogenomics is a field of personalized medicine that screens an individual's DNA to determine the optimal treatment and/or dosage for that individual based on their unique genetic code.  We have a proprietary testing model called the "PAST" Protocol for pharmacogenomics testing which provides medically actionable, clinically relevant data and interpretation for physicians. 

Why Pharmacogenomics For My Practice?

In short, pharmacogenomics testing reduces liability for the provider, and provides better therapy for the patient - with a simple mouth swab that is as easy as taking the patient's temperature.  Often, drug choice and dosage require experimentation in order to find the best treatment  option.  With pharmacogenomics testing, the need for this experimentation is decreased.  Thus, the process becomes faster and more cost-effective - which decreases the possibility of adverse drug reactions caused by the wrong drug choice or dosage.

What are the benefits of pharmacogenomic testing?

Pharmacogenomic testing benefits:

  • Decrease the possibility of adverse drug events:  Adverse drug events lead to more than 777,000 injuries and deaths every year.  Adverse Drug Reactions are the 4th leading cause of death in the US, and the 5th leading cause of illness.
  • Reduce the need for trial-and-error treatment planning:  Since appropriate drug choice and dosing are more accurate with pharmacogenomics testing, the need for experimentation to find the best therapy is lowered.
  • Increased cost-savings:  Adverse drug events result in up to $35 billion in hospital costs annually.  In addition, experimenting with treatments can be expensive.  Thus, pharmacogenomics testing reduces overall cost for patients, physicians, and payers.
  • Pharmacogenomics test results are easy to read and implement:  The patient's pharmacogenomic test results are neatly organized in a concise, simple manner for quick and efficient implementation.  Drugs are organized into three categories (green, yellow, and red) and complete dosing recommendations are given for each.
